Question of the Week
Beginning this week, we are adding a new section to the weekly newsletter called "The Question of the Week." Parents can use the form at the bottom of this page to suggest questions each week that they would like to know the answer to but maybe have never asked, such as "Why does my child need to wear a swim cap," "When is my child old enough to shave his legs for a swim meet," or "What are those funny looking doo-hickeys the coaches keep putting on my child during practice?" Please include your name with a question submission.
Question of the Week (Submitted By: Amy Brehl): Water bottle at practice... what's up with that?
Most of us know bringing a water bottle to a workout is a good idea, but this is true even for young athletes. Workouts longer than 45 minutes can dehydrate a body, and we strongly encourage all swimmers to bring a water bottle to practice, regardless of their age. Many swimmers do not even realize that they sweat while they are in the pool, but bringing a water bottle to practice, and encouraging your child to drink from it and not bring it back full, is a good habit to get into even at a young age.
Gatorade or another sports drink is acceptable also, and because many swimmers prefer the taste, this may encourage them to drink more at practice. Water is less expensive and despite what sport drinks companies may say, nearly as effective at hydrating an athlete. A good rule of thumb to use is a 16 oz water bottle or more for Gold, Silver, Bronze, Level 2, and Level 1 swimmers, and a 32 oz water bottle for Junior and Senior Group swimmers.
